The Paralympics, established for athletes with physical and visual disabilities, was first held in conjunction withr the Olympic Games at the Rome 1980 Summer Olympics. Since then, the slate of sports has increased to the point where five sports spanning 64 events will now be contested at the Vancouver Games. For certain sports, like Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, and Cross Country skiiing, the athletes are classified into different categories relating to the extent and type of their disability. Whereas, for the other two sports: Curling, and Sledge Hockey, athletes with lower body disabilities can only compete.
